First Ice Cream Cone!

One of Margarita’s Summer 2017 Bucket List items was to enjoy her first ice cream cone!

We took her to the Sand Stand in Medford, NJ – I think she enjoyed it! Haha!

Amalthea Cellars Farm Winery: Atco, NJ

Another great New Jersey winery ~ Amalthea Cellars !

Such a cool tasting room! Dog’s aren’t allowed inside – so if you visit with a friend, be sure to have them watch your pooch while you check out the inside of the winery.

We sat outside on the pretty grounds and very much enjoyed ourselves and the wine!

White Horse Winery: Hammonton, NJ

White Horse Winery, located in Hammonton, NJ, quickly became one of our favorite wineries!

Dogs are not allowed in the tasting room.  However, leashed, well behaved friendly dogs are allowed outside, where they have corn hole, live entertainment, fire pits, and plenty of seating.

They have a nice selection of white, red, and rosé wines.

I think this may be Margarita’s new favorite winery as well!

K-9 Central Wild Card Double Header: Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada

In July, we were back in Canada for the second year in a row! We attended this event last year where all three of our competitors earned their invites to the 2016 DockDogs World Championship. This trip proved to be just as rewarding, as again, all 3 GSP’s won, and earned their invitations to the 2017 World Championship!

All buckled in and on our way from New Jersey to Ontario, Canada!

Thousand Islands Bridge:

Just some of the privately owned islands among the more than 1,8000 islands in Thousand Islands!

Waiting in line at Customs:

Look out, Ontario – the Liver Killers are in town!

We arrived at K-9 Central  – look how close our camper is to the competition pool!  It was so nice to crate the dogs from right under our camper canopy and to be able to watch the competition from our camper spot!

Margarita

At last year’s event, Tremblay Equine Massage Therapy was there, so we had signed Rita up for a massage.  I had taken a picture and shared it with them. The company used Margarita as their “Poster Child!”  Tremblay was there again, and Rita got another massage!

A storm rolled in, but it created a beautiful rainbow over the competition pool!

What an exciting event! 2017 World Championship, here we come!

Lighthouse Landing Campground: Marathon, NY

We stopped at Lighthouse Landing Campground for an overnight stay on our way to the dock diving Canadian Wild Card Event.

Lums Pond State Park: Bear, DE

We camped at Lums Pond State Park when the pups competed at the Pets in the Park competition.

We stayed on site 8:

Site 8 was extremely roomy, and had a lot of area to walk the dogs!  Other sites we wrote down to consider if site 8 was take are:  9 or 11

Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest fresh water pond in Delaware.  They offer camping, fishing, hiking trails, and a tree-top adventure course.

Pets in the Park: Newark, DE

Pets in the Park was held on June 10th and 11th, 2017 in Newark, Delaware.

Limoncello

If you remember from our Steel Stacks event, Limoncello had been a bit “off.”  Her performance was still not her usual, so we scratched her from the rest of the event in case she wasn’t feeling well.

SteelStacks is one of our favorite venues for dock diving – and Keystone DockDogs is one of the best hosts!

We were able to camp right in the parking lot at SteelStacks too!

Limoncello:

This was a very “off” event for Cello.  She was definitely not herself, and it showed through in her performance.  We wound up scratching her from some of her jumps until we could get her seen by a vet to be sure she was OK.

If you are in the area and can stop at SteelStacks, it’s worth the trip – the stacks are amazing to see in person, and they host some pretty cool events and great concerts!

Dimatteo’s Winery: Hammonton, NJ

Dimatteo’s Winery is located in a major farming are of Southern New Jersey.

We very much enjoyed the wines here, and purchased several bottles to add to our stash at home.

The tasting room was dog friendly!

Plagido’s Winery: Hammonton, NJ

Plagido’s Winery had been on our list for quite some time.

However, dogs are only allowed on the patio area, so we had to wait for a nice day to visit.  It was worth the wait!

All the grapes are planted, picked and fermented on the estate grounds.

We learned during our visit that the owner of Plagido’s used to have a German Shorthaired Pointer, who unfortunately, he had recently lost.  We enjoyed talking to him about the breed, and he enjoyed meeting Margarita.

Margarita Makes the Front Page of The Burlington County Times!

SHAMONG — About 20 pairs of eyes widened and a few shouts of excitement rang out as two four-legged visitors took over Linda Newman’s first-grade class Tuesday at the Indian Mills Elementary School.

“I want to pet them! I love dogs!” the students said in chorus.

Robyn Klim, the district’s director of pupil services, asked the students to quiet down and gather in a circle as she led her dog, Lena, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, to the center of the room. Following behind was Jen Beadling, a middle school teacher with her dog, Rita, a 7-year-old English pointer.

The two dogs were recently trained and certified as therapy dogs and were part of a new districtwide initiative to support student success.

“Our goal of the program is to provide students with the support, encouragement and friendship of a nonjudgmental therapy dog,” Klim said. “Research shows that a relationship with a therapy dog allows students to be more successful in school and the community.”

The goal of having the dogs in the school is to help alleviate stress and help students focus, Klim said. For example, the dogs could come into the guided reading exercises and help students who are struggling with reading stay on task. The dogs have already visited one class where students were taking a test, Klim said, and they were allowed to pet the dogs to help stay calm and chase away any nerves.

The program began at the school earlier this month as a way to build skills and confidence for the students.

Each of the classes will get an introduction lesson, just like Newman’s class received Tuesday, before the dogs will be brought back for other activities. Klim said that Rita had already made her second trip back to a middle school class who had the opportunity to pet her while taking a test.

The plan is to continue to expand into next year, to allow all classrooms to sign up for about one visit a quarter. Teachers will be able to go into the “The Bark Room,” and sign up for a visit.

As the program expands, teachers can match their lessons to incorporate the dogs.

Both Klim and Beadling were getting their dogs trained as therapy dogs for different purposes when they started discussing it with each other.

“Wouldn’t this be awesome to do for our school district?” Klim said.

From there, Klim worked with Superintendent Christine Vespe to set up a board policy allowing the animals to visit during the day as well as secured insurance.

The dogs will be accompanied by Klim and Beadling at all times that they are in the school. Students who do not want to participate or parents who do not want their children to participate will have the opportunity to opt-out of the program, Klim said.

So far, however, Vespe said not one student in the district has opted out.

Excitement filled the room Tuesday as the students got to interact with the dogs and learn about them. Beadling told the students how she rescued Rita last year, while Klim discussed how she adopted Lena about two years ago.

“I love you Lena,” Keegan O’Brien, 7, said as the dogs were walking around the circle.

Still, he said Rita was his favorite dog that he had met.

“I really like Rita cause there’s a girl named Rita in Power Rangers,” he said with a smile.

For Klim and Beadling, seeing the students smiles and positive reactions has made the program worth it.

“I think it’s very exciting for the kids to have exposure to therapy dogs (and) learn about them,” Beadling said.

Klim said teachers are starting to use the dogs as a motivation tactic for the students.

“I think that (Lena) is motivating our students,” she said. “She’s providing positive rewards for our children.”

Mother’s Day 2017

Being a mother doesn’t mean being related to someone by blood.  It means loving someone unconditionally and with all of your heart.

…To all the moms out here who traded beauty sleep for dark circles, salon cuts for ponytails, long showers for quick clean-ups, late night parties for late night potty walks, sleeping-in for early morning face-licking-wake-ups, pedicures for PAWdicures, and designer bags for poop bags…Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day 2017!

National Limerick Day

National Limerick Day is celebrated annually on May 12, and celebrates the birthday of English artist, illustrator, author and poet Edward Lear, known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and limericks.

National Limerick Day also celebrates the limerick poem.  Limerick poems were popularized by Edward Lear’s book “Book of Nonsense.”

A limerick is a very short, humorous, nonsense poem. A limerick has five lines.  The first two lines rhyme with the fifth line and the third and fourth line rhyme together.

Here is an example:

THERE WAS A YOUNG LADY
By Edward Lear

There was a Young Lady whose chin
Resembled the point of a pin;
So she had it made sharp, and purchased a harp,
And played several tunes with her chin.

Here at Cello’s Corner we thought it would be fun to try and create a Limerick about Limoncello. So on May 12, I did my best on writing my first Limerick:

Bring Your Child to Work Day

Brian and I only have “fur-kids,” so we have never been able to participate in Bring Your Child to Work Day, as the jobs we have do not allow us to bring 4-legged children to work…UNTIL … this year when Margarita became a registered Therapy Dog!

IMG_7884

I am a Special Education teacher, so Miss Rita came along with me to work on April 27 (also my birthday!) to attend class with my students, and to make some Therapy Dog visits to a few other classrooms.

Miss Rita, keeping class in order! All the students were SUPER attentive, of course!

IMG_7908

The students just love their time with Rita!

…and after a long, hard day of work, Rita needed a pick-me-up – so we stopped by Starbuck’s and she ordered herself a Puppuccino!

This was the best birthday gift ever!

We’d love to hear from you! Does your job allow you to bring your 2-legged or 4-legged children to work?

Margarita’s First Day of School

Those of you who have been following along know that Rita became a registered Therapy Dog.  My school district decided to start a Therapy Dog program, and Rita was one of the first dogs starting the program!

My students were super-excited! They made welcome signs, and we marked the calendar for her first day of school!

Students created posters and centimeter cube formations to welcome Rita to our class:

Ready for her first day of school with her Paw Patrol backpack!

Rita did very well with the kids, and the students enjoyed having Rita by their side as they practiced multiplication facts.

Rita was quite exhausted after her first day with the students, and napped her way through my Prep period.

Rita’s first day was a success – what a great program this will be for the students!

BoardWaddle

On April 8, 2017, Margarita volunteered at the 2017 Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue “BoardWaddle,” held annually at the Ocean City, NJ, Boardwalk.  Our friends over at Barking from the Bayou would have loved this event!

IMG_6698

Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue is an all-volunteer non-profit group dedicated to finding forever homes for homeless Basset Hounds in the New Jersey, New York, and Eastern Pennsylvania Areas.

IMG_6707

Each year the Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue hosts BoardWaddle in Ocean City, NJ.  There is a fun “Doo Dah Parade,”  with hundreds of Bassets waddling to the delight of the crowd.

IMG_6677

After the adorable Bassets waddle down the Ocean City Boardwalk, everyone gathers at a picnic. Here owners and their dogs hang out with all the hounds, check out the arts and crafts show, other rescues, area shelters, and/or get something to eat at the food vendors.  This is where Rita volunteered all day.

A highlight of the picnic is the awards. There are awards for the top-10 pledge-getters and, of course, awards to the winners of the basset games: Best Trick, Best Costume, Best Parade Float and many more.

Rita had a wonderful time volunteering as a donation dog for Pointer Rescue, Org with her fellow pointers, Lady and Mr. Spock, and friends, Grace and Jen!

Paws for Art

On April 2, 2017, Rita attended the Wheaton Arts Paws for Arts to volunteer as a donation dog with her Fiance, the very handsome Mr. Spock, for Pointer Rescue, Org (PRO). All cash that Rita collected was donated directly to PRO.

Three 3’s Brewing Company: Hammonton, NJ

Hammonton, NJ has several wineries that we have visited, but we had never tried a Hammonton brewery.  We loved the beer and the atmosphere here!

Tasting room:

This brewery is a small craft brewery in downtown Hammonton,  NJ. Their focus is brewing IPA’s and Saison style beers, which are available in their tasting room and distributed all over NJ.

The beer selections in our tasting were delicious, and the brewery was extremely dog friendly!

Southwind Vineyard and Winery: Millville, NJ

This may be our new favorite winery!

A very unique and cozy tasting room:

Very dog-friendly!

And so many delicious wines!

Southwind is located in Millville, NJ, and was established just about 40 years ago.  Located on a 100-acre farm, Southwind always has events to attend such as yoga, book club, and Art & Wine nights.  The grounds also has many walking and riding trails to enjoy.

This is currently Cumberland County’s only winery – so if you are in the area, make this a “must do” on your agenda – you won’t be disappointed!

Double Nickel Brewing Company; Pennsauken, NJ

Double Nickel is a craft brewery located in Pennsauken, NJ, and is super dog friendly!  This brewery is located in the town I grew up in, so I was very excited to visit and do a tasting!

We enjoyed all the beer we tasted!

This brewery was definitely worth visiting – we will be back for sure!

Eclipse Brewing; Merchantville, NJ

Eclipse Brewing is located in Merchantville, NJ in the town’s former EMS building.

I was excited to try this Brewery, as it is located in the town where I attended elementary school!

The tasting room had a great atmosphere – and had a World, United States, and NJ map where you can pin the location you are from!

Getting Medford Lakes on the map!

The owner is a 27-year homebrewer, and has some very tasty selections!

I liked each of the four beers in my tasting – and so did Brian.  We stayed for a glass of our favorites.

We will definitely be visiting Eclipse again soon!

Rita’s 1st “Gotcha” Day / Rita’s 7th-ish Birthday!

Today is a very special day, as this date marks one year since we met Margarita, and brought her home as “Penelope / Penny,” our GSP Rescue of New Jersey foster dog.  Although we didn’t officially adopt her until April, We picked March 4th – the day we met her – as Rita’s “Gotcha Day /Bday.” During her initial evaluation last year, it was estimated that Rita was 6 years old, which makes her approximately 7 years old now!
Unfortunately, Rita, found as a stray, had a bit of a rough start to life. She went through some health issues and operations during her first month with us – she was underweight, had to have 9 teeth pulled, a lumpectomy, was spayed, had “happy tail” from being in a crate, and treatment for Anaplasmosis. However, Rita was a trooper, and has had quite a healthy and active first year with us!
I promised myself that because Rita didn’t have great experiences in the first part of her life, I would introduce her to as many good things as possible, finding what activities make her most happy, and continuing to have her participate in those events. During our first year with Rita, she has been on 15 camping trips, and visited 8 new states including, DE, IN, IA, MD, NH, NY, OH, PA, and VA. Rita has even been out of the country (Canada) as well! She has visited 4 wineries, 5 breweries, 3 restaurants/bars, stayed overnight in 2 hotels, and shopped at Cabela’s and Lowe’s. Margarita has participated in 5k races, Barn Hunt, Nose Work, Lure Coursing, swim lessons, and agility. Margarita also completed training and is a registered Therapy Dog with The Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and has begun her “official” Therapy Dog visits at assisted living facilities and a local library’s children’s reading program. Most recently, Rita and I have earned our registration as a Reading  EducationAssistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) team!
Brian and I were quite content with the size of our pack before meeting Margarita. However, Rita has filled an emptiness that we didn’t even know our family had. Not only has she been a great playmate for Hooch (who often was excluded by Cello and Lager during their play sessions), she has brought the utmost joy and love to Brian and I, as well as everyone she meets. People stop us continually and ask to meet her everywhere we go. My students at school – who have never met her – love her and talk about her constantly just from looking at her picture in my classroom. There is definitely something very special about this sweet soul, and we are extremely honored to have her as a family member!
Thank you to all of you who love and support Margarita both in-person, and from afar – we can’t say enough how much we appreciate it!!
Happy Gotcha Day, Señorita Margarita, we love you!!

Registered R.E.A.D. Team

Not long after Margarita and I passed our test to become a registered Therapy Dog Team with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, I learned about a great program called R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs). I decided this would be an excellent opportunity for us, so I began to study for the written test.  One day before Margarita’s 1st Gotcha Day / 7th-ish Birthday, we received the great news that I passed, and we are now officially a registered R.E.A.D. team!

“The mission of the R.E.A.D. program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy teams as “literacy mentors.”

The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to an animal. But not just any animal. R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children.

R.E.A.D. is the first and foremost program that utilizes therapy animals to help kids improve their reading and communication skills and also teaches them to love books and reading. It’s been growing around the world since November of 1999 when ITA launched it here in Salt Lake City. More than 3,500 therapy teams have trained and registered with the program and are going strong!

Today, thousands of registered R.E.A.D. teams work throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, France, Sweden, South Africa, Slovenia, Spain, Netherlands, Norway and beyond. “

~Intermountain Therapy Animals

We are very excited to be a part of this wonderful program!

Lure Coursing

We recently tried Lure Coursing with Rita!

Lure Coursing is a system of mechanized lures and pulleys that simulate the unpredictability of chasing live prey. Dogs of eligible breeds are evaluated for follow, speed, agility, endurance, and overall ability as they pursue an artificial lure zigzagging across an open field.  All dogs one year of age or older from the following breeds are eligible to participate in Lure Coursing Events.

AKC Recognized Breeds

  • Afghan Hound
  • Basenji
  • Borzoi
  • Cirneco Dell’Etna
  • Greyhound
  • Ibizan Hound
  • Irish Wolfhound
  • Italian Greyhound
  • Pharaoh Hound
  • Portuguese Podengo Pequeno
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Saluki
  • Scottish Deerhound
  • Sloughi
  • Whippet

If your dog is not one of the listed breeds above, you can still have them participate in the CAT test.  The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is an introductory event fashioned after the sport of lure coursing, and is for any dog of any breed, including mixed-breeds, as long as it is at least 1 year old and individually registered or listed with AKC. It tests a dog’s basic coursing instinct or hunting-by-sight ability. The dog chases an artificial lure, and the test is a non-competitive pass/fail event with dogs run one at a time. To pass the test, a dog running alone must pursue a lure, completing the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a given time. Dogs that pass the CAT three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title, and 25 passes results in a Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) title. Licensed lure coursing clubs may hold CATs in conjunction with a licensed lure coursing trial or as a standalone event.

If your dog is not AKC registered at all, they can still participate in this lively and healthy activity by attending practice runs, as Rita did in the below video.

 She had a blast!

Rita’s First Shopping Experience at Lowe’s Home Improvement

Rita came along with us to Lowe’s Home Improvement to help pick out our porch floor stain!

Come on, Dad – you are taking too long!

My tail points to English Chestnut… trust me on this one!

Yup – we have everything, Dad! Now let’s go home and play fetch!

Margarita was a great shopper!

*Please note- not all Lowe’s Home Improvement stores are dog friendly.  The company leaves it to the store manager’s decision, so be sure to call ahead if you plan to take your pup along with you to shop in a Lowe’s store.

Evesham Library’s Wagging Tales Program

Evesham Library offers a monthly “Wagging Tales” event where children come to the Library to read to Therapy Dogs.  Margarita is now a part of this awesome program which aims to help children boost their confidence and increase their communication and literary skills while reading to a registered Therapy Dog.

We are very excited to be a part of this program!

The Liver Killers Review the CarPET Pet Hair Remover

Having both brown dogs as well as a white dog, we can never seem to be without dog hair showing on our clothes, furniture, or car upholstery.  I was very excited when we were asked to review the CarPET Pet Hair Remover by GlosStock.

m_block-img-5310cb21c0848

The packaging was appealing, and the directions were easy to understand.

I was especially excited we had been asked to try the CarPET Pet Hair Remover when I had a rental car with a black cloth interior, and forgot to put a seat cover down before taking Margarita on a ride with me!

file-feb-15-3-06-02-pm

When I realized how much of Rita’s white hair was all over the rental car’s back seat, I ran to get the CarPet Pet Hair Remover…

file-feb-15-3-03-49-pm

…and good thing I did~it worked great! Watch how the white dog hair begins to disappear:

The CarPET was super easy to use – all you have to do is hold one side of the rubber block FLAT on the surface and brush it lightly. You do not need to rub forcefully, as the pet hairs, will naturally brush away and gather on the block.   After every few strokes either tap the block gently and the hair will fall away – or for longer hair, simply pull it off the block with your fingers and dispose. If necessary, you can also clean the CarPET by running it under some water to rinse.

Rita is super excited that the CarPET also comes in her favorite color:  hot pink!

William Heritage Winery: Mullica Hill, NJ

William Heritage Winery  is family owned and operated, and located in Mullica Hill, NJ.

The outside patio is dog friendly, and the wines are probably some of the best we have tasted in NJ!

The Underwater Treadmill is a Great Low-Impact Workout!

One of the ways our pack stays fit during the off-season in the winter months is using an underwater treadmill.  We take our dogs to Dr. Fulton at V-Crest.

This type of exercise is beneficial to dogs as it uses the therapeutic properties of water to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, and boost endurance.  The underwater treadmill is a low-impact, high-resistance workout that provides optimal training and conditioning. During the off-season, this activity provides a rigorous cardiovascular workout for our pups, with reduced impact and stress on their joints!

Barn Hunt at Tail Wagging Events

Rita and Limoncello have both earned their Rat I title (Instinct level), and both have one qualifying run for their Rat N title (Novice level).

We attended a barn hunt at Tail Wagging Events to see if we could both secure at least another qualifying run in the Novice level.

Unfortunately, neither team was able to do so, but we once again had a great time with our pups!

Margarita Graduates from Bachelor of Arfs Obedience Class!

Margarita attended an 8 week obedience course in preparation for her Therapy Dog registration.  During this class, Rita learned things such as:

  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Down
  • Back
  • Stand

Rita graduated with flying colors! So proud of this girl!

Brian had flowers waiting for Rita when we got home!

Rita Is Now a Registered Therapy Dog!

Those of you following along may remember that Margarita and I took a Therapy Dog Workshop in preparation for taking our Therapy Dog test.  I am proud to announce that Margarita and I passed the 4-part test to become a registered team with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs!

Margarita has already visited an assisted living home, a medical facility, and also participated in a local library’s children’s reading program!

Congratulations, Margarita!
