After Cello’s first day of Dock Diving at Pooch Palooza , we drove to Assateague National Seashore.  It was so cool to see the horses roaming free!

DSC07127

While we were driving, the horses were walking right down the street toward our car – there were several times we had to just stop until the horse decided to move.  I took this picture in the passenger seat with my phone inside of our car:

There were horses EVERYwhere…and I can see now why the park has signs such as this posted:

DSC07255

At first, I was thinking, WHY would they even have to post those signs?  Isn’t that common sense?  …Apparently NOT! …

DSC07523

These people look closer than 10 feet to me! DSC01625

We then drove to the beach:

Aside from the “moving water,” Hooch had a blast during his first trip to the beach, we enjoyed the beautiful views, and Cello made it her “job” to tell off every horse we saw from the back seat of our car 😉

After helping us complete a home visit for potential adopters for the GSP Rescue of NJ, Cello and Hooch enjoyed some vanilla ice cream at a local favorite spot…

La Quinta Inn and Suites, Sommerville, MA

After our awful few nights at the La Quinta Inn and Suites in Andover, MA (read about our experience HERE), we decided to check out of that hotel, and check in to the La Quinta Inn and Suites in Somerville, MA.  WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

DSC03962

This was more like it!  The hotel was new, clean, and the staff were SO nice!  We were so glad we switched hotels for our last night in MA!

DSC03840

We were on the 5th floor, and Cello loved being able to lay on the bed and look out at the street below:

DSC03971

We would definitely stay here again!

Tommy Doyle’s Irish Pub, Cambridge, MA (Kendall Square)

After we had grabbed a bite to eat at Charlie’s Kitchen, we headed over to Tommy Doyle’s Irish Pub, located in Cambridge, MA in Kendall Square.  Read more about Tommy Doyle’s HERE.

DSC03673

Tommy Doyle’s had a nice outdoor seating area, where we enjoyed a glass of wine with Cello and Hooch.  Although we didn’t eat here, they had a pretty good looking menu!

Tommy Doyle’s is definitely a great place to get your Irish on if you are in the Cambridge/Kendall Square area!

Charlie’s Kitchen, Cambridge, MA (Harvard Square)

Each day after Cello was finished for the day at her Regional Event, we ventured over to Cambridge, MA (Harvard Square), and got a bite to eat and some cocktails at Charlie’s Kitchen.  We sat in the Beer Garden, and just LOVED it! Read more about Charlie’s Kitchen HERE!

photo (6)

Before going to any dog-friendly establishment that I have found online, I always call ahead to verify that the place is in fact still dog friendly. When I had called Charlie’s to ask if it was true that dogs were allowed, the woman who answered the phone said “If you come, please don’t come withOUT your dog!!”  We were thrilled, and we were not disappointed with our visit!

DSC03665

When we entered Charlies, most every employee stopped what they were doing to come over to greet Cello and Hooch as if they were celebrities!  We were welcomed at both the bar and the outdoor seating areas.  A Pabst Blue Ribbon water bowl was immediately brought out for Cello and Hooch.

Charlie’s had some great choices on their menu – check it out HERE! On our first visit, we could not resist to try the Lobster Roll!  It was awesome!  Brian chose to get french fries as his side choice, and I got fried green beans as mine (DELICIOUS!!) Our wine was served in cute little pilsner glasses.

Brian and Cello checking out the menu:

On our second visit, we chose to split two of their signature burgers.  We ordered one Double Crab Cheese Burger and one Lobster Burger, and again, were not disappointed!  Both burgers were AWESOME.  Brian tried the sweet potato fries as his side, and I, again, got the fried green beans.

Charlie’s Kitchen has a super-cool atmosphere, great food, tasty drinks, and is by far one of THE most dog friendly restaurant/bars we have been to!

…oh – and has my most favorite sign ever:

Hooch’s first restaurant experience!!

DSC03576

We decided to try Outback Steakhouse for dinner while we were in MA.  Brian and I have not been there in years!

DSC03577

We just HAD to order a Bloomin’ Onion for our appetizer.  In addition to enjoying some wine at the outdoor seating area, Brian ordered a steak – and I enjoyed an Ahi Tuna appetizer.  The staff were very friendly, and welcomed Cello and Hooch with a water bowl, and lots of attention!

LaQuinta Inn and Suites, Andover, MA

We stayed at the LaQuinta Inn and Suites in Andover, MA for Cello’s North Eastern Regionals Competition (Read more about this event HERE).

(This was Hooch’s first hotel stay!)

DSC03382 - Copy

We had stayed at a LaQuinta in Harrisburg, Pa for one of Cello’s dock diving events, and had a wonderful experience.  The hotel was clean, and the staff could not be more friendly.  Read more about it HERE.

This experience was QUITE different.  There were 2 Laquinta’s to choose from for Cello’s Regional Competition.  We chose the Andover location, even though it was 20 minutes away, because with the DockDogs discount, we saved $400 at this location.  The LaQuinta in Andover was a bit older than the one we stayed at in Harrisburg, PA, and had a very “dirty” feel to it.  When we went into our room, it smelled awful. When we told the hotel front desk staff, and instead of changing our room, they gave us the rug deodorizer they use to spray on the rug, and told us to spray the rug ourselves!  (SERIOUSLY!?!) We should have immediately checked out at that point!!  Our hotel keys did not work consistently, which made it difficult trying to get back into the room with two dogs, and I heard others complaining about this as well.  We decided to stick it out in this hotel – but were regretful that we didn’t change hotels after the sight of our room!

I was completely creeped-out in this smelly room!  To make matters worse, I had just recently received an email from a friend about a creepy hotel situation just minutes from our home (later found to be false news!)

The following story is from Empire News:

———————————————————————–

Body Found Under Motel Bed, Police Say It Has Been There At Least 5 Years

MOUNT LAUREL, New Jersey – empire-news-body found under motel bed police say its been there 5 years

Stunning news this morning out of New Jersey, as reports of police discovering the body of a young woman under a motel bed have been confirmed. The owners of the motel asked that their name and location be omitted from news reports to protect their business.

The body, which has yet to be identified, was found by a person staying in the room.

“I dropped the television remote, and when I went to check under the bed I found her. It was like something out of a scary movie,” said Aaron Silver, the man staying in the room.

According to initial reports by the medical examiner on-scene, it appears as though the body lay undisturbed in the room for about 5 years. There was a normal amount of rot and decay on the body to suggest that it had not been moved or touched over the course of that time.

The motel has not made a comment about the issue but have told police that they are constantly cleaning their rooms and have no idea how this could have slipped beneath the cracks.

“I clean that room every day. I noticed a smell several times, and told my manager,” said Anita Rodriguez, a housekeeper at the motel. “He told me to just use extra Febreeze in the room and it would go away eventually. I always hated cleaning that room.”

Motel representatives say that all their rooms are cleaned daily, but that it is not the policy of the company to make their housekeeper check under the beds.

“They do a heavy clean of the rooms to sanitize for guests, but when it comes to under the beds, they just run the vacuum around the edges. Who really looks under the bed, anyway? No reason to waste anyone’s time,” said Charles Dyson, a representative of the motel chain.

“It’s the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen,” said police chief Joe Goldsmith. “I’ve seen a lot of strange things in my time on the force, but to think about all the people who’ve stayed in this room, with a dead body beneath them, and they didn’t know about it? It gives me the heebie-jeebies.”

Police have seized room and occupant records for the last several years, and are trying to trace the person or persons who may have stayed in the room around the time of death.

“Funny thing is, the records also show literally almost 1,000 complaints from people who stayed in the room over the years. Everything from a bad smell to an ‘eerie feeling.’ Several people even asked to switch rooms in the middle of the night,” said Goldsmith. “The motel really should have checked out that room a little more closely.”

(see the original link HERE)…again  – found to be false.

———————————————————————–

Even though the above story was false news, the bad smell we were experiencing creeped me out.

…So… I still insisted that Brian look under the bed! 🙂

(Cello “helped,” of course!) 😉

photo (9)

PHEW! No dead body here!  In fact, the bottom of the bed was solid, so there was no “under-the-bed!” (I was still creeped-out by the way!)

After all of the above, to top it all off, we had REALLY noisy neighbors (not from DockDogs). SO…we finally had it with this hotel, and actually checked out of this La Quinta a day early.  We booked a room at the Somerville location for our last night in Massachusetts after other DockDogs members had given us great feedback on the hotel. (BEST move ever!!) We would NOT stay at the Andover La Quinta again!!

Hooch and Cello didn’t seem to mind too much:

Capitol City Brewing Company, Arlington, VA

In honor of both Cello and Millie earning a new personal best, Team Millie invited us out to celebrate at Capital City Brewing Company in Arlington, Virginia.

Capital City Brewing company first opened in 1992 in our nation’s capitol as Washington DC’s first brew pup since prohibition.   We visited the Arlington location, located at the Village of Shirlington, on Campbell Avenue in Arlington, VA.

Detour Winery is located in Keymar, Md.  We drove on some really beautiful country roads to get there. The winery provided free tastings of their wines for the dock dogs participants, and offered wine by the bottle or glass for sale.  They were also selling a really cool wine “sippy cup” that I just HAD to have…!

The Rusty Nail, Cape May, NJ

DSC01403

The Rusty Nail (“The Nail”, as it’s known by the locals) is a well-known legendary surfer bar that dates back to the 70’s.  They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner at The Nail, and of course, host an incredible happy hour with live music.  Kids meals are served on a souvenir Beach Shack Frisbee, creating something for the little ones to do after they finish their meal and are waiting for the adults.  There is indoor seating, outdoor picnic table seating, a fire pit, sand pit, and shuffleboard – this place has it all! Even the four-legged kids are welcome here!…and not only are dogs welcome, they have their very own Doggie Menu!

Jessie Creek Winery, Cape May Courthouse, NJ

DSC01366

Jessie Creek Winery was such a pleasant surprise! A couple who we ran into at a winery earlier in the day had told us that they did not like the wine here, nor was the staff friendly. Luckily, we decided to form our own opinion, and stop at this winery for a tasting. At Jessie Creek, the vineyard is harvested and processed on site by hand.

DSC01354

Not only was the girl presenting the tasting extremely nice, but the owner (seen far right in the above picture) was super friendly, and very interesting to speak with.  He gave us lots of information on all of the wines we were tasting, and was a joy to converse with.  The wine tasting was only $5, and included a taste of all of their wines, and a souvenir Jessie Creek wine glass to take home!

DSC01356

After our tasting, we enjoyed a glass of our favorite wine from the tasting on their porch with friends, Brandi and Stan.

DSC01362

The property also has a beautiful farm house built in 1846 that has been converted into a bed and breakfast.

I am so glad we all decided to stop at this vineyard despite what we were told!

DSC01365

Again, a recommended winery to stop at while in the Cape May area!

Natali Vineyards, Cape May Courthouse, NJ

Cello visited Natali Vineyards during our stay in Cape May.

DSC01336

The winery was setting up for a festival when we were arriving.

DSC01338

Even through they were getting ready for a big event later that day, everyone at the winery was helpful, friendly, and laid-back! The people here are super-friendly (very dog-friendly too!), and very knowledgeable about their wines and what foods to pair them with.  Natali offers a variety of wines – some really unique, such as strawberry, plum, cherry, peach, blueberry, cranberry, and banana wine!

DSC01340

We learned a lot about their wines as we participated in their wine tasting, before enjoying a glass of wine on their outdoor patio with friends, Brandi and Stan.

DSC01344

We would definitely recommend a visit to this winery if you are ever in the Cape May area!

Willow Creek Winery, Cape May, NJ

Willow Creek Winery is a 50 acre vineyard located in Cape May, NJ.  They offer a variety of wines, including red and white sangria.

The grounds are gorgeous!

PJ Whelihan’s, Medford Lakes, NJ

After a hard-days-work of being a donation dog at Working Dog Winery, Cello made a stop for some dinner…we were all hungry!!  PJ Whelihan’s was the perfect place to grab a bite to eat!

PJ Whelihan’s is located in Medford Lakes, NJ, a 1.2 square mile town with 22 lakes, and over 150 log cabins!

Working Dog Winery, Hair of the Dog 5k and Chesterfest Wine Festival, East Windsor, NJ

We made it out this Sunday to Working Dog Winery in East Windsor, NJ, for the Hair of the Dog 5k / Chesterfest Wine Festival!

Proceeds from the 5k race benefit local animal rescues. The Chesterfest Wine Festival immediately followed the race.  $10 got us entrance to the festival, and a souvenir wine glass.  Award winning wines from Working Dog Winery were available to buy by the glass or bottle.  Flying Fish Beer had a tent set up to purchase their beer as well.  Food carts from Nomad Pizza, and Zinna’s Bistro provided yummy food choices. Live music was also provided by Vic Della Pello.

Everyone brings blankets and chairs, and spends the day enjoying delicious wine and good music…all while supporting local shelters!

While we were at the festival, Brian noticed that there was a woman selling some jewelry.  I am not a big jewelry person, so I hadn’t even noticed the table of jewelry – but Brian told me that I “HAD” to go look at this woman’s jewelry.  What I didn’t realize, is that this lady was selling jewelry made from sea glass. Brian knew that as a child, I would collect sea glass at the beach each year my family stayed at the Jersey Shore.  Brian spotted this, and knew I would just love it! He bought me a necklace made from sea glass, with a charm attached that was shaped like a heart with paw prints on it. Brian is such a thoughtful husband…and I’m a lucky gal. 🙂

If you enjoy wings, or buffalo-style anything, the Pic is the place to visit!  Pic-A-Lilli Inn  not only has some really great NJ Pine Barren history, (beginning in the early 1920’s!!) it’s known to have the best wings around! Be sure to read the history of this place, and how it all began here! This well-known family-owned establishment is now in it’s 5th generation of ownership, and still going strong!

This weekend, we made a trip back to the Pic…this time with Cello.

We had the pleasure of discovering Bellview Winery in Landisville, NJ this weekend.

photo 5

Bellview Winery is located on a 100 yr old 150 acre Farm in Southern NJ.  This winery not only had delicious wines (wine tasting is only $5 for 8 selections of your choice), but they were extremely dog friendly.  Cello was allowed inside in the tasting room, and anywhere on the grounds.

photo 1 a

For the wine tasting, we chose the following wines:  Chardonnay, Jersey Devil White, Pinot Grigio, Traminette,  Nana’s White, Fiesta, Black Currant, and Cristallina.

London Grille, Paris Wine Bar, Philadelphia, PA

Located in the historic Fairmount Neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA, London Grille  is a short walk from several museums, including The Franklin Institute and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.   This establishment has been featured in Philadelphia Magazine, Philadelphia Style, The Wall Street Journal, and US Airways Magazine.

DSC00862

Although we did not try the well-known food at London Grille, we did enjoy a glass of wine from Paris Wine Bar, the “sister-establishment” to London Grille.  Six wines are offered here “on draught,” tapped from kegs that have  been specifically filled by the winemakers for Paris Wine Bar.  The wine selections change frequently in order to showcase the best of Pennsylvania’s winemakers such as Allegro, Pinnacle Ridge, Galen Glenn,  and Manatawny.  The rotating selections always include 2 whites, three reds, and one dry rose.

Cello enjoyed the attention she received from 2-legged and 4-legged passerby’s, and the Sauvignon Blanc we ordered was delicious.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA

DSC00842

Located in the Fairmount Neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Eastern State Penitentiary is chock full of history, and quite a site to see!  Be sure to take a moment to read the history and timeline of this place…you won’t be disappointed!

If you ever want a REAL scare, visit this landmark at night in the month of October for “Terror Behind the Walls!” …by far THE scariest Halloween Haunted tour I’ve ever been on!!

If you look closely, you will see Jenny and Cello standing just to the left of the front opening of the penitentiary:

DSC00819

Opening in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was the most expensive structure of its time, and became the most famous prison in the world. The penitentiary was also “home” to many famous criminals including:

  • Al “Scarface” Capone – Chicago’s most famous mob boss
  • William Francis Sutton – one of the most famous bank robbers in American history
  • William “Blackie” Zupkoski – Self-proclaimed “Toughest Man in Philadelphia”
  • Leo Callahan – the only prisoner to ever successfully escape from the penitentiary

Valley Green Inn, Philadelphia, PA

Located along Forbidden Drive in the Wissahickon Valley Park area of Philadelphia, Valley Green Inn is a great place to end a hike in the Wissahickon Valley Park, and has some great history behind it!

DSC00719

We started my birthday hike in the park at the Inn, and were planning to end our hike here with a reward of good food and drinks.  We made reservations for the dog-friendly porch seating area, overlooking the Wissahickon Creek.  However, Cello had her own agenda planned.   We did not realize it was Wissahickon Day, which included a horse parade down Forbidden Drive.  Cello has been very vocal in displaying her distaste for horses lately (something we have begun working on immediately and hope to correct).  We decided it would be best for the horses outside of Valley Green Inn if we had lunch elsewhere!   We decided to head over to the Fairmount Neighborhood of Philadelphia instead.

We hope to come back to Valley Green Inn someday soon with Cello to enjoy food, drink, and the view of the creek.

Cello was on meds for a rash that she developed, and Brian had hurt his knee, so we didn’t hike this trip – – but you can, from this location, also hike out to see Humback Rock, pictured below.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

Cello had her first ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway!  She had been on Skyline Drive before, but she had never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway! The Blue Ridge Parkway spans 469 miles and connects the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive.  Construction began in 1935 in Cumberland Knob, near the North Carolina/Virginia state line.  The parkway was completed in 1983.

The Natural Bridge is located in Natural Bridge (Rockbridge County), Virginia. It is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States, and is included in several “Natural Wonders of the World” lists, designated a National Historic Landmark, a Virginia National Landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The wines here have won many medals including Best in Show in the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, Best in Show in Town Point Competition, and has also won the Virginia’s Governor’s Cup twice.

Wade’s Mill, Raphine, Va

Wade’s Mill is a working flour mill built in the 1700’s.  The mill was built by Captain Joseph Kennedy, an early settler of the Shenandoah Valley.  The Kennedy family owned the mill for about 100 years before it was bought by James Wade, whose family operated the mill for the next 4 generations.

Wade’s Mill is now officially registered as a historic place:

Wade’s Mill is one of the few remaining flour mills that actually still produces flour exclusively on mill stones.  While we were there, the current owner was milling!

The bottom of the mill has a store where you can buy all the goods milled at Wade’s Mill.  We bought some polenta, grits, and pesto bread…YUM!

I had the fried green tomato appetizer and shrimp and grits (couldn’t resist some good southern menu choices that we can’t get up here in Southern NJ!)

Redbeard Brewing Company, Staunton, VA

How could Cello resist stopping at a brewing company named after her Daddy 😉  With Brian being a “ginger”… we couldn’t resist stopping at  Redbeard Brewing Company , located in the historic Wharf district of Staunton, Va. It is Staunton’s first downtown brewery,  and they specialize in “small batches of big beers.”

Here is Cello with her Papa Redbeard 😉

The tasting room is in a building that was originally built in 1904 and used as an office for a local coal and lumber business.  The building also served as a scale house for horse drawn coal wagons.  The loaded wagons would pull up under the building’s archway to be weighed by the Fairbanks scale.

While camping in Staunton, Va, we visited Barren Ridge Vineyards right after we did some

“spelunking” at Natural Chimneys in Mt. Solon, Va.

Barren Ridge Vineyards is located in Fishersville, Va on a former apple orchard.  The winery makes 14 different wines, many of them award-winning. The tasting room is a converted 1890’s apple barn.  The owners preserved the original structure of the barn, and it’s wooden beams.  The ceiling in the tasting room is constructed of the original barn’s wood…it was really neat!

We enjoyed doing their wine tasting, and being able to have Cello in the tasting room with us:

Natural Chimneys, Mt. Solon, VA

During our Easter camping trip, we were lucky enough to have visited Virginia’s Natural Chimneys.  Natural Chimney Park is located in Mt. Solon, in Augusta County, Virginia, along the North River.  There is a campground located at the park with a pool, playground, and hiking trails.  Natural Chimneys Park is also home to one of the largest jousting tournaments in the Eastern United States.  The tournament has been held annually the third Saturday in August, since 1821!

It’s pretty amazing that the Shenandoah Valley was once the floor of an inland sea!  The “chimneys” formed from limestone that began to accumulate under the sea during the Paleozoic Era (some 500 million years ago!!) … the seven “chimneys” that stand at Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia tower an amazing 120 ft, and have caves within them.  While visiting the chimneys, Cello had her first spelunking expedition!

The historic town of Staunton, Va

Looking at the AAA magazine one evening, an article caught my eye about a small town in Virginia ranked one of the best small towns in the United States… Staunton, Va. We decided that this would be a great place to camp for our annual Easter camping trip.

Staunton is a unique and quaint town made up of 5 historic districts.  There is great architecture and unique shops and eateries to enjoy.

The Pennsylvania Capitol: Harrisburg’s Capitol Complex

We had never been to Harrisburg, so after Cello’s dock diving waves on Saturday, we took her to the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg, PA.

The city was very clean and looked like a great place to visit.  If we had time, I would have liked to have explored the area a bit more.

The Capitol building was beautiful!

Cello’s First Hotel Stay!

DSC09952

Cello participated in a dock-diving contest this past weekend.  What was planned as a camping trip in our travel trailer, wound up as a hotel stay due to yet another nasty snow storm that was predicted to hit both PA and NJ Sunday-into-Monday.  After a search of dog-friendly hotels in the area, we narrowed our choices down to three.  Two hotels were more “high-end”,  and the third, was more middle-of-the-road, but also recently built.  So, we went with the newest built hotel, and  “reluctantly” booked a room at La Quinta Inn and Suites Harrisburg/Hershey, in Harrisburg, PA.

I say “reluctantly” because Brian and I hadn’t stayed in a hotel since the weekend we got engaged in Boston, MA, in 2006!!  After our engagement, we began staying in bed and breakfasts for all our trips.  We continued choosing bed and breakfasts until 2009, when we bought our dream home (a log cabin on a lake) that wasn’t quite in dream-home condition.  So, we gave up traveling to begin renovating our cabin.   In 2011, we gave tent camping a shot…a last-minute decision trip that wound up being the start of a new love for us.  We tent camped with Cello until August of 2012, and then upgraded to “Glamping” and bought a Jayco travel trailer to continue our camping adventures. Since we bought our travel trailer in October of 2012, our thought has been “if we can’t camp there, we don’t go there.” …UNTIL it meant “scratching” a dock diving event that we had already signed Cello up for.

Leading up to this hotel stay, I was very, VERY nervous – about not sleeping in our own bed, about Cello and how she would react… about all aspects of our upcoming hotel stay!…and I have to say, I was quite pleased…with EVERYthing.  The hotel was just recently built, so it was very clean – still very new looking and smelling, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful, pleasant, and dog-friendly.  Each time we entered the hotel, Cello was greeted by the front desk staff with hugs, kisses, and dog treats!

Cello took her first ride in an elevator and wasn’t scared at all!

When we got to our room, Cello made herself right at home, and was SO well-behaved during our entire stay!

Steamship Authority Ferry Ride to Nantucket, and the Island of Nantucket

August 2013

Cello’s second ferry ride was on the Steamship Authority high speed ferry to Nantucket Island.  Cello was allowed on the tour bus, and went on a 1.5 hour bus tour around the town of Nantucket to see the oldest house on Nantucket Island (Jethro Coffin House), the Old Mill built in 1746, and even a few lighthouses.  She also took Cisco Winery’s shuttle to visit Cisco Brewers.

Island Queen Ferry and Martha’s Vineyard, MA

August 2013

Cello’s first ferry ride!  Cello spent the day in Martha’s vineyard and saw the oldest working platform carousel, Flying Horses (mark that down for another National Historic Landmark visit for Cello!), and the Gingerbread Houses of Martha’s Vineyard. She also had her first ride on a public transit…dogs were allowed on the buses in Martha’s Vineyard!
