Happy Valentines Day from the Liver Killers!

Lager, Limoncello, Hooch
We thought it may be a good idea to continue to give Lager’s nose a work out. We signed him up for K9 Nose Work Class at Wonder Dogs, which is where we had taken both Cello and Hooch for their puppy training. Lager LOVED it, and although he was being taught to identify a completely new scent, he picked right up on this game, and is having a blast!
The humans in our pack are not fans of snow, but the fur-kids LOVE it! We knew Cello and Hooch loved snow from last year’s winter, but we were not sure how Lager would react. Without much surprise, Lager was excited as ever, and thoroughly enjoyed playing in the snow, and catching snowballs!
Here are some pictures and video of the Liver Killers enjoying the Blizzard of 2016 :
Lager’s first snow
Brian having a snow ball catch with the pups:
Cello showing the boys how it’s done:

Hooch making the catch:

Lager eyeing up the catch:
Lager over shooting the throw!
The pups had a blast in the snow, and although shoveling wasn’t so fun, Brian and I enjoyed watching Cello, Hooch, and Lager enjoy themselves!
Is it summer YET!?!??! 🙂
Brian and I got engaged the day before New Years Eve, so we used to always make a big party out of the holiday, whether it was hosing a big bash at our home, or attending a big gala or celebration… until we got Limoncello. Cello is gun shy… and shy of ANY loud noises – fire place crackling, fireworks, etc. So ever since we discovered that she was fearful of fireworks, we decided to make New Years Eve a family night at home, so that we could be there to comfort her. Once neighbors start to set off fireworks, Cello pretty much spends her night huddled in with her Papa.

We do try to make it a fun night before the “scary noises” begin, and of course, always have some NYE bling to dress the pups in!

Happy New Year from our pack to yours!
Last winter was really tough for our pack. With an abundance of snow, and many freezing temperatures, it was difficult to get them outside to exercise. This made for many WILD days inside, as German Shorthaired Pointers need to run, run, and RUN (did I mention run?!). So for Christmas, Brian bought the pups a doggie treadmill to keep them in shape this winter, and to help keep the GSP zoomies at bay.
Our only feline fur-kid, Loki (aka PHATcat), was officially the first family member to attempt get on the treadmill. (Funny, because he could TOTALLY benefit from it!! haha!!)
Hooch watches from afar as Loki sits on “the big scary thing in the bar room .”

In typical Hooch fashion, Hooch hates the treadmill. Yup – scared to death of it. He will stand next to it while it is off, but will not stand on it -or be in the same room with it while it is running. … That’s my Hoochie Man 🙂
Limoncello will do pretty much anything you ask of her. She lives by her Papa’s motto, “Champions are made in the off-season.” 🙂
Lager does EVERYthing you ask of him, and does it like it’s his job… he took to the treadmill quickly, and enjoys it so much, that he will actually go stand on it, waiting for someone to turn it on!
Overall, this Christmas gift has been a lifesaver. On bad weather days, the dogs can still get their exercise in! We have developed a routine with Hooch for “treadmill nights.” Instead of the treadmill, we play ball indoors with the Chuck-It indoor ball.
Brian will throw the ball up over the balcony so that Hooch has to run up the steps to get the ball, and back down. Once Hooch has the ball, he is so proud that he will run down the stairs, jump over the couch, and run through our bar room into the kitchen…so our steps become a doggie stair-master, our couch turns into a hurdle, and our bar and kitchen rooms, a sprinting path. Hooch LOVES it!
This winter we vowed to keep the dogs busy (and tired!) despite whatever Mother Nature presented to us… even though our house may be a bit crazy, we are keeping our word, and the dogs are having a blast!
Lager’s first Christmas was an exciting one!

Santa even visited Lager at our cabin!

The pack had a blast! This year, to celebrate our pups making it to the World Championship, we decorated our Christmas tree with the dogs’ ribbons and medals from special events throughout the 2015 season.

…And the stockings were hung by the chimney with care..

The Liver Killers must have been really good this year, because Santa Paws left lots of toys!
Oh what fun the dogs had on Christmas morning!!
Merry Christmas from The Liver Killers!
This Thanksgiving, we are thankful for these three turkeys!

Words cannot express how exciting this week was for our pack! All three of our pups qualified for the World Championship, we drove further West than we’ve ever been before, we got to see some pretty cool sights along the way, all three Liver Killers finished within the top 10 in the world in their own divisions, and best of all, we had a safe trip out and back, with no injuries or illnesses. Here is a recap of the Liver Killer’s preparation for our road trip, and some of our adventures on the drive!
Everyone was asking for us to bring Tommy D’s famous Limoncello, so Brian made a few batches to bring with us:

We ordered lots of bling the month before our trip! We designed and ordered team gear from CustomInk.com – – and when the company saw we donate to the GSP Rescue of NJ, they made their own donation in the Liver Killers name to the GSP Rescue of NJ – how nice was THAT?!
Our trip wouldn’t be complete without truck bling!
Our talented friend, Mandy made our trading cards:
And, of course, we did lots of shopping:
Jenny has a very difficult time packing lightly, so the packing started (and never seemed to stop!)… and Brian decided it was a good idea to rent a little trailer just in case 🙂
DockDogs had a window decorating contest for everyone making the road trip out to Iowa… so of course we dressed up the truck windows!
And we’re off!

As we crossed state borders along our ride, we saw some pretty neat sights:
It was difficult to be in the car for so many hours, so we stopped often to let everyone potty and stretch their legs
Along our stops, we came across the coolest place right off of I-70 in Indiana! Not only is it the World’s largest “candle,” it was a candle company and gift store that had a cute little restaurant, THE coolest bathrooms ever, huge and safe areas to walk the dogs – and best part of all ???… they welcome dogs INside!
We are huge American Pickers fans, so we couldn’t help but stop to see their Antique Archaeology shop!
Crossing the Mighty Mississippi!

We went a bit out of our way for this one, but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to stop at the movie set from Field of Dreams!

Once we checked into the hotel, and got the pups settled, we celebrated our adventurous road trip, and our safe arrival at our destination in Iowa!

What an exciting week of competition we have ahead!
May the Force be with you this Halloween!
Princess Cello: “Be nice to my brothers?… I’d just as soon kiss a Wookie!”

Hooch Vader: “Cello, you underestimate the power of the Dark Side!”

Imperial Walker Lager: From the U.S. Military to the Imperial Army

Since Lager has joined our family, we have tried to keep his nose busy so that he can still feel like he is doing his job. Here is Lager finding Hydrogen Peroxide in our home. Hydrogen Peroxide is just one of the 30-plus explosives ingredients Lager is trained to identify.
Pretty impressive!
From no jump, to the Hoochie Hop… to sailing through the air! … The Evolution of Hooch!
At our last dock diving event, Family Fun Day, this past weekend in Elkton, MD, there was a drone flying around filming the weekend happenings.
Cello and Brian were filmed during one of their jumps – how cool is THAT?!?!
We were very excited with this first-time ever view of Cello in action!
This Easter we camped with friends at one of our favorite campgrounds – Frontier Town Campground, in Berlin, MD.
We first discovered Frontier Town Campground when we attended a dock diving competition held right in the campground! We camped here for the dock diving competition as well.
Here is the view from our site:
The water views around the campground are gorgeous!
This was Hooch’s first-ever Easter! It was exciting to make his basket for the first time!
Cello’s Easter basket:
Easter morning – the Easter Bunny has arrived to the 5th Wheel with toys and treats!
Cello and Hooch had a great time opening their Easter baskets with the help of their Pop!
After Cello and Hooch opened their Easter baskets, they had an Easter egg hunt in the 5th Wheel! …see if you can find all the “hidden” eggs!
Yay! Hooch found his first bacon-filled Easter egg!
After each egg is found, the pup who found the egg gets the bacon inside of the egg – Hooch thought this was LOTS of fun, and waited patiently for his bacon reward!
Hooch enjoyed all his Easter treats and toys – and, of course, stole Cello’s bunny toy!
Overall, we had a great trip, and Hooch enjoyed his first-ever Easter!
On March 14, (Cello’s birthday!) we traded said goodbye to our travel trailer, and bought a new 5th Wheel!
We are away so often at dock diving events, that we decided to upgrade our GLAMping to incorporate a 2014 Grand Design Solitude 369rl – and we LOVE it!
Bye Bye, travel trailer! We brought our 2013 Jayco White Hawk home to unload it. We will miss this camper, and all the great memories it brought to us!
All pictures were taken with my phone the day we looked at the 5th Wheel and decided to buy it.
This is our new 2014 Grand Design Solitude 369rl. It is 39 feet long!
A much bigger refrigerator than our travel trailer!
I love the floor plan, and the roomy feel the island gives to the kitchen area.
A pantry and fireplace… two things we didn’t have in our travel trailer – but are LOVING in this camper!
Theater seating with 2 recliners:
This shower is MUCH bigger than our old one! (Pink stuff is the antifreeze since it was still winterized when we looked at it)
King size bed (we had a Queen in our last camper ).
Other side of the bedroom:
Our huge bedroom closet:
Picking up the new 5th Wheel….
At the dealer were made to watch a movie on how to work the RV – Brian is carefully watching the sewer hose hook-up 😉
Going through our class on how everything works…
Getting ready to haul this beast home!
Backing into the storage lot for the first time…
We love our new camper!
Here we are taking a break from setting up and unpacking at the storage lot:
Our camping sign from last year displayed a travel trailer and only a “Cello” dog bone – – so a new camping sign to include our 5th wheel and Hooch was in order!
We didn’t waste any time – we immediately booked at trip to Elk Neck State Park. Brian, Jenny, and Hooch have been there before – but this was Hooch’s first time there!
This is our first ever blogging award!
Cello’s Corner has been nominated for the prestigious blogging Liebster Award by canine friends, Buzz and Missy, and their mom, Barbara, over at k9sovercoffee.com !
We want to thank you, Buzz,Missy, and Barbara, not only for this nomination, but for all your support, advice, and encouragement as Jenny continues to learn the “how-to’s” of blogging!
It was fun answering the questions that were presented to us by k9sovercoffee.com ! I hope you enjoy reading some new, or unknown facts about our pack. Incorporated throughout this post are lots of pictures within our responses. I hope that you take delight in the “visuals” of our replies as well!
Here are our 11 Questions from K9sOverCoffee:
1. What is your & your pup’s favorite outdoorsy activity & why?
Our pack’s favorite outdoorsy activity is hiking. In fact, we have a post that explains the benefits of hiking with your dog, as well as a whole section of our blog dedicated to Cello and Hooch’s hiking adventures! We enjoy hiking because it provides many benefits to Cello and Hooch, such as exercise, bonding time with their human pack members, variety in their surroundings to keep them stimulated, and socialization with other pups and “peeps” on the trail! Hiking also benefits the two humans of our pack (Jenny and Brian) by giving us an opportunity to exercise with our pups, relieve the stress of our day, reward us with a sense of accomplishment, and (my favorite!) it allows for many, many breathtaking views and picture opportunities!
2. Does your pup have a favorite sleeping position?
Yes, and Yes! Cello’s favorite position is either curled up under the covers, or cuddled up with her favorite “baby,” Lamb Chop. Hooch’s favorite sleeping position is on his back, with his legs spread wide open, as he snores (loudly!)
3. Have you had any crazy vet expenses?
Luckily (knock on wood!) we have been fairly lucky with vet expenses. Although Cello has had many issues since she was a pup, and is currently dealing with a skin and liver-value issue, our expenses have not been outrageous, as we have experienced in the past with both of our Miniature Pinschers. Once we were out of the “puppy shots” stage with Hooch, we have been very fortunate with his health and vet expenses as well.
4. What are your thoughts on dog insurance ~ yay or nay?
Yay…yay…YAY! As I mentioned in #3, we had 2 Minature Pinschers (Dante and Cleopatra) (who have since passed), who had many health issues throughout their lives. We did not have insurance for either of them. Both had severe health problems their entire lives, and both fell very, very ill in the their old age. We spent thousands (AND thousands) of dollars at a time during these episodes, and regretted not having insurance. When we brought Cello and Hooch home, the first thing we did is sign up for insurance! I know of several people who all use different companies, but we went with VPI Pet Insurance through a recommendation of our prior vet, and we have had great experiences with them so far.
5. Do you feed raw food or have you considered it?
At the moment we do not feed raw. For dry kibble, we feed Orijen to both Cello and Hooch. Hooch is on the “Puppy Large” variety, and Cello is on the “Six Fish” Variety. Both pups get a hard-boiled organic egg twice a week, and both get daily additions of Grizzly Salmon Oil, Coconut Oil, and Nupro in each of their meals. In the recent past, we had given thought to switching over to raw when it was discovered that Cello not only had a chicken allergy, but also had crystals in her urine, and a skin disorder. We did lots of research, and decided to try our current feeding option for Cello first. We switched to Six Fish Orijen, increased her water intake, increased her protein by adding organic cooked bison, salmon, and eggs to each of her meals. Cello also gets an additional supplement of Milk Thistle to help regulate her liver values. So far this has ben beneficial to Cello, and has improved her conditions. However, if we find that her nutritional intake is not keeping her as healthy as can be, we will again look into the option of feeding raw.
6. If you use specific poop bags ~ do you have a favorite brand? (we love Mutt Mitts)
We do not use specific poop bags, but do carry LOTS of them everywhere we go, as both Cello and Hooch are masters of relieving themselves in THE most embarrassing places on the occasion we have forgotten our poop bags, or have not brought enough!
7. What brought you to the blogging world (other than your pawsome pup)?
Cello is the sole reason the blog was created! My goal was to document our adventures, and share with the world the abundance of love and joy Cello (and now Hooch!!) bring to us each and every day!
8. Does your K9 have a feline best friend?
Cello and Hooch have a feline brother-from-another-mother, named Loki, named (quite appropriately) after the Norse god of trickery and mischief! Loki thinks he is “just one of the dawgs!” He has a funny personality, and loves to snuggle with his pack, meows for treats, and follows us everywhere we go in the house!
9. What does your perfect Saturday (or other day off) look like?
Ahhh, the weekend – a day off means a day of fun…our favorite! Our perfect weekend day is doing what we enjoy with Cello and Hooch. We are fortunate to live on a lake, so some weekend days we enjoy just sitting on our dock, letting Cello and Hooch dive and swim. We also enjoy hiking with Cello and Hooch, and seeking out dog-friendly attractions, historical sites, and wineries / breweries (Cello even knows how to sit on a bar stool, and has been served a drink {of water!} at the bar!) Cello and Hooch also participate in dock diving competitions, so on many Saturdays and Sundays we are at events with family and friends, which we also enjoy very much enjoy!
10. Does your pup like his paws handled?
We have tried our best to pet, touch, and message both Cello and Hooch all over their body since they were small pups, in hopes to make them comfortable with being handled either by us, or a veterinarian. Both Cello and Hooch are really great about letting us touch their paws and trim their nails.
11. Do you indulge in doggie kisses?
Definitely – – and and as often as we can!
11 Random Facts about our Pack:
1. Cello’s full name is “Tommy D’s Limoncello,” and originates from Jenny’s grandfather’s homemade Limoncello recipe.
2. Cello and Hooch live in an authentic log cabin, built in 1927. Jenny and Brian have been (slowly!) renovating the cabin themselves over the past five years, back to it’s original beauty.
3. Hooch’s full name is “Windy Spot’s Homemade Hooch,” and is a combination of the name of our cabin, and the homemade Limoncello in #1. Read the full story HERE!
4. Our entire pack volunteers for the German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue of NJ by doing home visits, calling potential adopters, transporting dogs, volunteering at events, and fostering. Cello and Hooch very much enjoy volunteering as donation dogs while Jenny and Brian help educate others about the GSP breed and rescue.
5. Cello’s DockDiving Big Air personal best (distance) is 23′ 7″ … and Hooch’s is 16′ .
6. Cello has visited 9 states in her 3 years, and Hooch has vacationed in 6 states in just his short 8 months!! …Hooch has spent more weekends away, then he has at home!
7. We love to go camping!!
8. Since there have been so many recalls on food and treats, Jenny started “Cello’s Cucina,” and bakes homemade treats for Cello and Hooch.
9. Cello has appeared in the newspaper for Halloween and dock diving, and has been featured in a calendar as well as in The Dog Show Journal. Hooch recently won a contest and is going to be featured on a greeting card.
10. Cello has ridden on a public bus, a ferry (to both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard!), a tour bus, and a golf cart during our traveling adventures.
11. Cello and Hooch’s coloring is called “Liver.”

…and many Adventures were had! This post is Cello and Hooch’s 2014 Year-In-Review. The bold print links you to the original post for that particular event.
2014 was all about growth. Our friends multiplied, as we met new people while competing with Cello in dock diving. Cello’s titles increased as she continued to achieve and amaze us with her dock diving ability. Our family ballooned as we added our son, Hooch, who also blossomed himself, from a rowdy little pup, into our “Big-Man.” Most of all, our passion for each other and our “unique” and sometimes crazy family increased greatly. Thank you for joining Cello and Hooch on their 2014 adventures!

Through the months of the year…
JANUARY
January was extremely rough in the weather department. Cello did not participate in any dock diving events, and we had snow-covered ground for pretty much the entire month. Temperatures the entire month were either freezing, or below freezing, and the lake we live on remained frozen. There were only 2 days in January that were above freezing AND there was no snow on the ground – so we made sure to get Cello to the dog park on those two days, as we had MAJOR cabin fever!
FEBRUARY
February continued to bring more snow! Cello did not participate in any dock diving events, but we still had some noteworthy happenings to share.
MARCH
The winter had been brutal (and that’s putting it lightly). We had “HAD IT” at this point! South Jersey had over 18 days of snow, with snowfall totaling over 75 inches by March 9th. If it wasn’t snowing here, or there wasn’t snow and/or ice on the ground, it was uncomfortably cold (got down to -4 degrees one day!). The lake we live on was frozen most of the winter, and the streets were full of BIG potholes and cracks. These types of conditions do NOT make a GSP happy! Cello did not go to the park – or walk – or run WAY too many days this winter. We had to get creative with indoor physical activities like hide-and-seek, our version of the doggie stair-master (throwing a ball up-and-over our balcony so Cello has to run up-the-stairs/down-the-stairs to retrieve her ball)…as well as mentally stimulating indoor activities like practicing basic commands and “tricks.” On a positive note, Cello participated in her first dock diving event of 2014.
APRIL
Possibly our most adventurous month yet…we took our annual Easter camping trip, and finally we could spend some time outside!
MAY
May is when dock diving really got under-way for us. We had a great time at dock diving events, and, of course, were sure to fit in many other adventures.
JUNE
A HUGE dock diving month for Cello! She made her first Elite Division finals, obtained her Masters Title at the National level, and earned her personal best Big Air distance of the year.
JULY
Of course, the biggest highlight of this month was bringing home Hooch!
AUGUST
August was a busy month – a lot of traveling and dock diving. We were happy to still be able to fit in some time to volunteer for the GSP Rescue of NJ.
SEPTEMBER
This month was yet another busy one, as Hooch was beginning to grow into a energetic puppy. We enjoyed traveling with him, as he watched his big sis compete.
OCTOBER
October brought on many dock diving events, and Hooch’s first Halloween trick-or-treating adventure! Hooch made his first plunge into a DockDogs pool (just from the exit ramp, of course!) We got a chance at some of these events to solidify friendships with people we had met during the 2014 dock diving season.
NOVEMBER
This month we went on our annual Thanksgiving camping trip (Hooch’s first Thanksgiving holiday), as dock diving began to wrap up for the year. Although we were disappointed that Cello did not qualify for the World Championships, also held in Nonmember, that did not stop us from having yet another fun, adventure-filled month!
DECEMBER
Hooch celebrated his first Christmas and New Year’s Eve this month. December flew by, as we not only hosted the Christmas Holiday, practice began for the 2015 dock diving season, and Hooch started to come into his own as a dock diver.

Hooch celebrated his first New Years Eve! Since we did not have Hooch in our family until after July 4, we were unsure of how he would handle fireworks. Well, he takes after his big sister Cello – and doesn’t like them ONE bit! We were very glad we were home to be with our two fur-kids, so we could make them feel safe during all the “booms!”
Pawty Animal, Hooch, on his first New Years Eve:
Cello helped ring in the New Year too:
Happy New Year’s Eve 2014, Everyone!
Remember “Bella,” the adorable 16 week old GSP puppy we fostered?
Click HERE to read the original post about this adorable puppy!
Well, Pepper (Bella’s new name) is doing GREAT and is as happy as can be in her new home with her 4-legged sister, Mocha, a Vizsla/Weimaraner mix, and her two human sisters who give her lots of exercise!
We were lucky enough to get invited over for a play date, and boy, did we have a BLAST!!
All 4 dogs had an absolute blast running in Pepper and Mocha’s huge yard!
Here they are in action!
We very much enjoyed seeing how happy Pepper is with her forever family! We plan to get all the dogs together for play dates often in the future!
Hooch had never been to a dog park yet, so we took Cello and Hooch to John Connolly Memorial Park, in Voorhees, NJ.
Hooch was having a blast chasing Cello and the Chuck-It ball – UNTIL a huge male Great Dane puppy decided Hooch looked like a cool dude to play with. The Great Dane wanted nothing but to run with and chase Hooch – but the size of this immense pup scared poor Hooch to death! He ran away barking like mad, and ended up running to his mommy for safety! The poor Great Dane had no idea why Hooch did not want to play with him! Hooch was pretty spooked at that point, so we left the dog park.
Hopefully visit #2 will go a bit smoother for the Hoochie Coochie Man!
Hooch and Cello in action:
Of course Cello wanted nothing but to chase her ball, so nothing or no one phased our ball-crazy gal!
Hooch celebrated his first-ever Christmas!
He was a good sport as we dressed him up with Christmas props!
Cello wasn’t left out of the Christmas madness:
“Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys, and time for cheer
We’ve been good, but we can’t last
Hurry Christmas, Hurry Fast…
…We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas don’t be late!”
Christmas morning proved that Santa Paws had Cello and Hooch on his “Nice List!”
This year we ordered German Shorthaired Pointer stockings from Pawsome Donations – each purchase helps out dogs in need, as 25% of all profits will go to rescue organizations, including the GSP Rescue of NJ. Check out the Pawsome Donations Facebook page HERE.
Merry Christmas, cabin style, from Cello and Hooch!
Yesterday we took Cello and Hooch up to Canine Spa in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania for Hooch’s first-ever dock diving practice with Keystone DockDogs members.
We were not sure if he would jump in or not – we were pleasantly surprised!
First, we just tried the “Place and Send Method” from the edge of the dock to see if he would jump in for his toy. Read more about the Place and Send technique HERE.
Once we knew Hooch would jump in, I tried the “Chase Method” next. Read more about the Chase technique HERE.
We were so proud of Hooch, and Jenny was so happy she didn’t fall in !
Luckily, we have not had a significant snow fall as of yet. However, we did have a day where the snow “stuck” just a little.
Hooch was not too sure what to do with it! He kept lifting up his paws!
I can’t wait to see Hooch’s reaction if/when we have a BIG snowfall this winter!
Cello likes the snow, but had no reaction to the little bit that had fallen.
And of course, snow did not get in the way of playing soccer!
Last winter was one cold snowy day after another… I wonder what this winter has in store for us!?
Once the Eagles picked up Michael Vick, we boycotted the team all together. Being life-long fans of the Philadelphia Eagles, we were not at all happy to say the least. Jerseys were donated, and no Eagles games were watched. Now that Michael Vick is gone, we have lifted the Eagles “ban” from our house, and have enjoyed cheering for our team once again. Hooch got his first Eagles Jersey, and enjoys hanging out with his daddy watching the games!
Discussing the game:
We tried very hard to get Santa Photos that would benefit a local shelter. We have always done this with Cello in the past. However, this year, we just couldn’t find any that would work with our schedule. I began to search online – and found that the Moorestown Mall in Moorestown, NJ, allows dogs in the mall for Santa photos on Monday nights!
When we got to the entrance of the mall, there was a red carpet leading all the way to Santa in his chair! Boy was it crowded!
Cello and Hooch waited in line on the red carpet waiting to see Santa and made friends along the way!
This Santa was GREAT! He was patient, and extremely good with the all of the dogs! He even stayed past 9pm (closing time) in order for all dogs to be seen!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
In searching for an indoor swimming facility for Cello and Hooch to use during the cold months, I found The Green Leaf Pet Resort and Hotel through a Google Search. It is about a 40 minute drive from our house. We decided to give it a try in hopes that we can bring Cello and Hooch here throughout the winter to keep up on their swimming, and to practice for dock diving. We are very glad we took the drive – we have never seen anything like this place…
The Green Leaf Pet Resort is AMAZING!
The entry way was so inviting, and very festive!
When I walked inside to the front desk, I was thinking how much it looked like an upscale hotel!
They even have a boutique for your pooch:
The Green Leaf does grooming, boarding, training, swim lessons, fitness training, specialized training, and day care!
Check out their boarding rooms – – can I stay here please?! Haha!
The pool room is just awesome. The pool area can be rented by the 1/2 hour or the hour. It costs $35 per half-hour, and they have package rates available. When you rent the pool area, you and your dog(s) are the only ones in the room – no others are allowed in, unless they are a part of your group.
There is a ramp into/out of the pool so dogs can easily enter and exit without having to jump in or climb out.
The facility provides pool toys, towels, life vests, and water-resistant leashes for use during your dog’s swim.
Hooch was a little hesitant at first, and just stood at the ramp, and watched Cello for a while!
Don’t mess with THIS guard!
Hooch started diving in and having a ball also!
Here they are in action!
The facility is spotless, the staff is friendly, and the amenities are endless here for your pup!
Happy Halloween! Hooch’s first Halloween began with a visit from the Great Pumpkin!
Cello and Hooch enjoyed their Halloween toys!
Hooch is loving that new toys arrive on his kitchen bed on all holidays 🙂
Jenny’s nephew James was dressing up as the Lion from the Wizard of Oz, so we stuck with the theme. The Lion, Dorothy and the Tin Man were off we were to see the Wizard!
James as the Cowardly Lion:
Cello wound up having some “wardrobe malfunctions,” so we had to fall back on Wonder Woman and Superman for the rest of trick-or-treating:
We hope everyone had as much fun as we did on Halloween!
Now THIS was a fun dock diving event!
Cello participated in Chesapeake DockDogs’ Halloween Fun Jump, held at Detour Winery in Keymar, MD.
Our friend, Kim, made Cello her dock diving suit! Check out Kim’s Super Fly Suits by clicking HERE!
This event did not count toward any rankings or titles – it was just for pure fun!
Cello in action:
Anyone was allowed to jump a dog… so Jenny jumped Cello for the very first time!
Jenny and Cello in action:
Brian and Cello beat Jenny and Cello by only 2 inches!! Cello jumped 22′ 9″ for Jenny! And both teams made the finals! How fun!
Our friend, John (Kim’s husband) jumped Cello too!
There was a costume party too! Superman and Wonder Woman were there 😉
and BEST of all… Hooch was reunited with his REAL brother and litter-mate, Ruger! Ruger’s parents brought him to this event so that the brother could be together again!
Meet Ruger!
Hooch and Ruger “meet” for first time after being separated at 7 weeks of age (Hooch is in blue)
Brotherly love!
Ruger’s parents hope to get him into dock diving – the 2015 season is going to be fun with the 2 brothers getting to spend time with each other and compete at events together!
After 6 weeks, Hooch graduated from his Puppy Head Start class at WonderDogs in Berlin, NJ, where Cello has also taken many classes.
Puppy Head Start is for puppies that are between the ages of 9 to 16 weeks at the start of class. This class is an introduction to puppy raising and management. Lessons taught included polite greeting behavior, walking on leash without pulling, the emergency down (drop), leaving things alone when told to, discussions on mouthing, house-training, safe socialization, and other subjects of importance to puppy owners. Each class lasted approximately an hour, including supervised playtime.
Hooch got a Philadelphia Eagles Jersey, Eagles tug-toy, and a foot ball for graduation gifts 🙂
Hooch’s next class: “Terrible Teens!” This class is for adolescent pups from 17 weeks to 12 months. This class will center on basic obedience, with a primary focus on how to utilize these exercises to produce a well-mannered pup. Discussions in class will center on exploring our dogs’ behaviors, and solutions to the problems commonly seen at this developmental stage.
A lot of people ask me WHY we would want to spend most of our free weekends traveling many miles to take Cello to dock diving events and practices. Most don’t understand why we enjoy this so much. Some are disappointed that we miss other events to attend dock diving competitions and practices. Many people chuckle, and even roll their eyes, when they hear my answer to the their question of “What did you do this weekend?” I get counter responses like, “It’s just a dog” (Ummm – really?! Click HERE to find out what “Just a dog” means to US, and why we feel sorry for those who “Just don’t understand!”) …”Your dog does WHAT?” … “So, let me get this straight… you spent your whole weekend watching your dog jumping into a pool?” …”You’re kidding, right?” (No, …we are NOT kidding!!)
Aside from spending time with some of coolest dogs and nicest people we have ever met, there’s an even greater reason…
I found this on Facebook, and It couldn’t explain any better just WHY we do what we do:
WHY TITLE A DOG?
Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores, a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor the dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in record and in memory for as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard.
And though the dog itself doesn’t know or care that its achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.
A title says your dog was intelligent and adaptable, and good-natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed.
And a title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with it because it was a good dog, that you believed in it enough to give it yet another chance when it failed, and that in the end, your faith was justified.
A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return.
And when that dear short live is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of pride in one small set of initials after the name.
A title earned is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, and permanently recorded.

Windy Spot’s Homemade Hooch
“Hooch”
German Shorthaired Pointer
Birthday: May 24, 2014
“Our Little Nugget”, “Hoochie Coochie”
When we found out that Limoncello’s mother had another litter, we could not help but go visit her, and see the puppies.
On May 24, 2014, Cello’s Mom, Shoal Branch Ladybird (“Lady”) gave birth to 10 puppies… we are now the proud parents of one of them!
Cello and Hooch’s mom, “Shoal Branch Ladybird” (Lady)
Hooch’s Dad, “FC Sky High Regardless”
Introducing “Windy Spot’s Homemade Hooch!” (Hooch for short!):
Why “Windy Spot’s Homemade Hooch?” When we bought our log home, Brian was able to search back to the original deed of the home and find the first owner of our cabin, which was built in 1927. Brian google-searched the man’s name for the heck of it, and his search brought up a link for the English Setters Club in Medford, NJ. The first owner of our home owned an award-winning GSP (which is how we ended up wanting a GSP), and Windy Spot was the name of that first dog and award winning GSP that lived in our home. We named our cabin Windy Spot, after that GSP, before we even met Cello. Read about our story here!
Hooch climbed right into Brian’s lap…and the rest is history!
The name “Windy Spot’s Homemade Hooch” … Incorporates the name of the first dog/GSP that lived here, and also refers to Limoncello being the “Hooch” that we make here at our cabin, Windy Spot… AND connects his name to Cello’s too 🙂
Welcome home, Hooch!
The Dog Days of Summer are here… How will you cool off your pooch?
(Pic from BringFido.com)
The Dog Days of Summer are upon us! With the onset of the heat and humidity, I’ve been asked recently by several different people where they could take their dog swimming to cool them off on hot summer days. This question got me thinking 3 things right off the bat:
(1) I need to appreciate where we live a bit more:
Cello is very lucky to have direct access to our lake to take her daily swims:
…and to play in the water alone or with friends…
…and to do what she loves most – dock diving!
(2) Just where in New Jersey CAN you take your dog to cool off if you do not have access to a pool, or other safe, clean body of water that is also in a dog friendly area?? Luckily, our good friend, and fellow GSP Rescue of NJ buddy, Ally, had done some of the work for me in a post she included on the GSP Rescue of NJ FaceBook page (Thanks, Ally!!)
…and …
(3) What can you do to keep your dog cool on a daily basis during the heat of the summer?
Before I include some suggestions for some dog-friendly swimming holes in New Jersey, and how to keep your pup cool in the heat, I wanted to share just why people say “Dog Days of Summer.” Being a dog-lover, I began to wonder why people chose this particular phrase. If you thought it was just a made-up saying like I did, think again! Thanks to The Weather Channel, and a little research, I found out what this term REALLY means, and where it originated. This term dates back to ancient times! “diēs caniculārēs,” or “days of the dogs” / “days of the dogs,” was what ancient people referred to as the period from the first week of July, to the second week of August.
Now that explains where the phrase originated, and when it started…but one still might ask, “Why dogs?” …Ever hear of the constellation, Orion?
Orion is often referred to as “The Hunter,” and is a noticeable constellation observable throughout the world. Close to Orion is the constellation Canis Major, which is Latin for “greater dog.” According to constellation fables, Canis Major is one of Orion’s hunting dogs.
Located within Canis Major is a star named Sirius, also known as the “Dog Star.” With the exception of our sun, Sirius is THE brightest star detectable from Earth. The vivid, blue-white star’s name originates from the Greek word for “searing.”
Because Sirius is so intense, it was effortless to trace, even for primitive astronomers. During April and early May, Sirius is evident in the southwest skies only after sunset. However, by the time mid-summer arrives, Sirius rises and falls with the sun. This would cause Sirius to “get lost” in the daytime skies. Nevertheless, the our ancestors knew that the “Dog Star” was still present in the sky, along with the sun, during the hottest time of the year. These primitive astronomers reasoned that since Sirius was so bright, and present in the sky with the sun, it must be contributing to the heat to produce the hottest time of the year.
Now what the ancient astronomers did not know, is that although Sirius is very vibrant, (according to Dr. Jon Nese, Penn State University professor, and former storm analyst for The Weather Channel, “Sirius is very luminous; if it suddenly replaced our sun, daylight on Earth would be about 25 times brighter than it is now)”… it’s energy (heat) does not affect Earth as much as the sun. Also, in spite of it’s brilliance, Sirius is also about half a million times farther away from Earth than our sun. As it turns out, our ancestors were not exact in their reasoning, but sure provided us with a cool saying for the hottest time of the year…and hey, it has to do with dogs – what’s cooler than that ?! 😉
OK, enough of the astronomy lesson, and onto WHERE you can bring your pup during the Dog Days of Summer. New Jersey is well-known for its beaches, so thanks to rescue pal, Ally, and the sweet, gorgeous Eve (a senior rescue!) here is a list of dog-friendly beaches in New Jersey in case you are vacationing at the Jersey Shore, or live close enough to drive to one of the beaches.

If you are not fond of the beach, here are two dog parks that I know of that also have a creek or lake for the dogs to swim in:
Timber Creek Dog Park, located at Chews Landing Rd and Somerdale Rd in Blackwood, NJ:
and Freedom Park, located at 86 Union Street, Medford, NJ:

If you see a dog left alone in a hot car, write down the car’s color, model, make, and license plate number. If the car is parked outside of a store, have the owner paged in the nearest buildings. If you cannot locate the owner immediately, call local humane authorities or police. Have someone keep an eye on the dog, and don’t leave the scene until the situation has been resolved. If the authorities are unresponsive, or too slow, and the dog’s life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back up your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal from the car, and then wait for authorities to arrive. Each state’s animal protection laws are different – get to know your sate’s laws HERE.
Most of all – don’t let these Dog Days of Summer get you or your pooch down…take advantage of the heat and spend some time cooling off with Fido, and doing some fun, bonding activities (like swimming) with your pup! Have fun, and keep cool!
Know any dog-friendly swimming areas in your state – or have some tips on how to keep dogs cool during the Dog Days of Summer? Please comment and share!
Happy Mother’s Day to All the Moms With 4-Legged Kids!
Brian had asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday. After giving it much thought, I decided that after the awful winter we endured, it would be great to get outside for the day since the weather was foretasted to be gorgeous. I decided on a family hike, ending with lunch and drinks at an outdoor, dog-friendly eatery.
There was a hike that I had saved on my All Trails wish-list, and have been intrigued ever since with the photos and description of this hike. The hike was at Wissahickon Valley Park. We left the house at 9am to drive to Valley Green Inn, where our hike would begin. When we arrived at Valley Green Inn, Brian, Cello, and I completed a 3.37 mile hike filled with gorgeous views and interesting trails.
We then headed over to the Fairmount Neighborhood in Philadelphia. What a great time we had! We stopped to take in the awesome Eastern State Penitentiary before heading down Fairmount Avenue to The Bishop’s Collar to cheer on the Flyers as we enjoyed a bite to eat and a celebratory birthday cocktail. Our next stop was at London Grill/Paris Wine Bar where we enjoyed a glass of wine. Next, we stopped at Urban Saloon for a quick drink before heading further down Fairmount Avenue to Hickory Lane American Bistro, where we enjoyed some delicious bruschetta. Our last stop was at Jack’s Firehouse for a glass of wine and some uniquely prepared calamari.
We didn’t get home that day until about 7:30pm! What a fun-filled birthday outing I had! The hike was gorgeous, and we packed a lot of culinary and historic experiences in to our day in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia.
To top my birthday off, Brian bought me a (much needed!) new laptop, from which I am composing this blog! Before this, I had been using a slow-running 7 year old laptop with a broken “A” key, and faulty battery! Brian realized how much I have enjoyed creating this site for Cello, yet how frustrating it was to work on an insufficient computer. He was thoughtful enough to purchase a great portable laptop so that I could transport it to work and to camping trips. I am a very, VERY lucky gal to be married to and loved by Brian.
Thank you, Brian, for a GREAT birthday filled with fun, adventure, and new experiences, and for picking out THE most perfect gift! You are the greatest husband, and best friend a girl could ask for – I love you with all of my heart!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
Brian, Cello, and I spent Easter weekend camping in Staunton, Virginia.
On Easter morning, Cello woke up to her basket and huge bunny left for her from the Easter Bunny!
Cello’s Easter Basket:
Cello’s Easter gifts waiting for her on Easter morning in our camper:
Cello was happy to see that the Easter Bunny did not pass her by in her camper
Cello even had her own egg hunt! Each egg was filled with treats!
Lamb Chop was even hiding an egg!
Found another one in the toy basket!
Brian helped Cello get the treat in each egg as she found them:
After the Easter festivities in our camper, we took a ride onto Skyline Drive. Even though we had been on Skyline Drive before, we had never been this far south on it, and we can’t ever get tired of seeing these views!
After our scenic drive on Skyline Drive, we visited Veritas Vineyard , and then stopped at Byers Street Bistro for some fried green tomatoes!
We had a great Easter Day, and a wonderful Easter weekend trip to Virginia! Hope you all enjoyed your Holiday!
Happy Easter!
For those of you who have been following Cello’s Corner from the start, you know that Cello is short for Limoncello…and that Cello’s full name is “Tommy D’s Limoncello.” Jenny’s Grandfather, Tommy DiRenzo, was famous for his homemade Limoncello, made with his “secret recipe.”
For those of you who may not be familiar with what Limoncello is, I hope this post gives you a good explanation…
When Brian and I give someone a gift-bottle of my Pop Pop Tommy’s Limoncello, we always attach a little folded card to the bottle that explains what Limoncello is, and includes a picture of my Pop Pop Tommy and Jenny, a watermark picture of our cabin, where the Limoncello is made, and of course, Brian’s favorite puppy-picture of Miss Cello! The card explains the history of Limoncello, as well as the background behind our Limoncello recipe.
Front of our card:
Inside of our card:
Back of the label:
There are many different recipes for Limoncello – – even a cream-version. We think homemade Limoncello (especially Pop Pop Tommy’s recipe!!) is better than bottled versions bought at the liquor store that we have tried. Summer is right around the corner…and Limoncello is wonderfully refreshing on a nice summer day! …Google search a recipe or two and give it a try!
This Friday, March 14, Cello turned three years old! I truly cannot believe it has already been three years that we have been lucky enough to have her in our life.
I’d say Cello had a pretty good birthday! …See if you agree!
I put together a “Basket of Birds for the Birthday Bird Dog,” which she discovered, and helped herself to her birthday goodies (after the “OK” command of course)!
Cello’s Aunt Casey stopped by and dropped off a nice birthday card, and a birthday gift! …Thanks Aunt Casey and Cousin James!

My very cool shirt from Casey and James…perfect!
Then, Cello had a birthday treat of fresh rotisserie chicken, green beans, and carrots…
And THEN, her Daddy took her on a shopping spree to PetSmart to pick out her own birthday treats….
I think overall, this birthday gal had a GREAT day!
Happy 3rd Birthday, Cello…we love you!!!
Well, it’s been a while…a LONG while since we could say it actually felt GOOD to be outside! This winter has been brutal (and that’s putting it lightly). South Jersey has had over 18 days of snow, with snowfall totaling over 75 inches so far (and more snow in the forecast for this week!). If it wasn’t snowing, or there wasn’t snow and/or ice on the ground, it was uncomfortably cold (got down to -4 degrees one day!). The lake we live on has been frozen most of the winter, and the streets are full of BIG potholes and cracks. These types of conditions do NOT make a GSP happy! Cello did not go to the park – or walk – or run WAY too many days this winter. We’ve gotten creative with indoor physical activities like hide-and-seek, our version of the doggie stair-master (throwing a ball up-and-over our balcony so Cello has to run up-the-stairs/down-the-stairs to retrieve her ball)…as well as mentally stimulating indoor activities like practicing basic commands and “tricks.” But nothing is as wonderful as outdoor runs and walks that exhaust a GSP (a tired GSP is a good GSP!!)
Today and yesterday finally felt warm! (I never thought I would hear myself say that temperatures in the high 30’s felt warm!!!) …so Brian, Cello, and I enjoyed a 4-mile walk each day this weekend in the “warm” 39 degree weather. It was great to see runners, bikers, and other walkers out and about. Everyone was commenting on how warm it felt, and how good it was to be outside. I still was bundled up in a big winter coat and hat…but it felt so good to be out in the fresh air and in the sun – with roads you could actually walk on without worrying about slipping on ice or snow!
It will get up to 60 degrees by Tuesday – quite a tease considering by Thursday it will be 30 and possibly snowing AGAIN 🙁 …Needless to say, we are very, VERY anxious for winter to be OVER.
10 more days, 8 hours, 29 minutes until the official First Day of Spring 2014
103 days, 8 hours, 29 minutes until the official First Day of Summer 2014
…but who’s counting ?!?! 😉
The month of January has been brutal all the way around.
First and foremost, I want to take the time to share our sympathy for our dock diving friends, Annie and Matt, who lost their beloved GSP, Bailey, suddenly on January 30th. Bailey was only 7 years old. You can view Bailey’s memorial page here. We are deeply saddened and will continue to keep Bailey, Annie, and Matt in our thoughts and Prayers. Annie has given Brian and I so much appreciated advice and help with dock diving. We looked forward to seeing Bailey at dock diving events, as she too, was a small GSP like Cello, and so very sweet. Bailey inspired us to buy Cello’s dock diving coat by Trover…and Cello’s Corner would not exist if it wasn’t for us meeting Bailey. Annie’s blog, The Little GSP, inspired me to start this site to share Cello’s Adventures with the world. We were lucky to have met Annie, Matt, and sweet Bailey…and Bailey was fortunate and blessed to have such loving, caring parents.
Our good friends, and parents of one of Cello’s boyfriends and dock diving-bud, Nemo also had an unfortunate incident. Nemo’s dad had fallen and injured himself, and Nemo’s mom travels a lot for work, …so they had asked us to care for Nemo for a short time. Despite Nemo’s dad’s unfortunate event, Nemo and Cello had a blast together. Nemo’s stay made for Cello’s first official sleep over. We had Nemo at our house for about a week, and enjoyed every second of our time with him. Nemo’s dad has since recovered, and Nemo is back home.
The love birds’ sleep-over!
January has also been rough in the weather department. We have had snow-covered ground for pretty much the entire month! It’s currently snowing again – and we are due to get a hefty snow storm again in just a few more days. Temps have been either freezing, or below freezing, and the lake is frozen. Cello has made the best of both the snow, and indoor playtime, but enough is enough! We had only 2 days that were above freezing AND no snow on the ground – so we made sure to get Cello to the dog park on those two days!
Fun in the Snow
The only 2 days we could get to the park when no snow was on the ground!
And sub-zero temps left lots of time to relax indoors…

German Shorthaired Pointers are often discarded, given up, abandoned, and returned due to their high energy level and strong hunting drive. Some are discarded by hunters because they won’t hunt, or they may be “gun-shy.” We have fallen in love with this sometimes misunderstood breed. ..So…Cello, Brian, and I have been volunteering for the GSP Rescue of NJ. We have made phone calls to vets for background checks and references, visited GSPs in shelters to evaluate them and offer the help of the GSP rescue, called potential adopters for initial screening, and to go over their application, and have done home inspections for potential adopters. Cello has even volunteered as a donation dog, wearing a donation vest and “working the crowd” with her cuteness at events such as the Ocean County Gunning and Decoy Show in Tuckerton, NJ. We recently decided we could help out a bit more…so we signed up to pick up and/or transport GSPs to their foster homes, and to foster a dog if needed. This past weekend, we were able to help two GSPs who were on the “urgent” list in Kentucky …they were scheduled to be euthanized. Here is the story of the rescue of Penny and Perry…
Meet Penny and Perry…
About two weeks ago, A regional GSP rescue group in the Kentucky area contacted the GSP Rescue of NJ about Penny and Perry because the rescue’s foster homes were full, and they would not have been able to save Penny and Perry from a kill shelter in Kentucky. Penny and Perry were found roaming in Perryville Battlefield State Park, in Perryville, Kentucky.
Penny and Perry were brought to a kill-shelter, and held for the required amount of days to see if their owners would come forward. No one claimed them after the hold-period was over, and they were placed on the euthanization list. We received an email from the GSP Rescue of NJ to see if anyone could foster these two sweethearts, or to help pick them up from transport. Two members quickly offered to foster. When I had seen the email, no one had responded to do the pick up and transporting, so Brian and I volunteered to do this. Just after the regional GSP Rescue group in the Kentucky area contacted the GSP Rescue of NJ, a woman in Kentucky came in to the shelter and adopted both Perry and Penny.
…But not even two days later, the woman returned Penny and Perry to the kill shelter because they were “too hyper.” The regional GSP rescue in the Kentucky area got back in touch with the GSP Rescue of NJ, and foster homes in NJ and pick-up and transport was again set.
Early this past Saturday morning, Brian and I took an 1hr and 45 minute road trip to pick Penny and Perry up from their Kentucky transport. I cried as soon as I saw them – – both were skin and bones, and severely dehydrated..but as Brian brought each one out of their crate to put a slip-lead on them, each dog stood up on their hind legs, put their front paws up to Brian’s chest, and kissed Brian with appreciation. These two dogs were so sweet loving!! It was heart-wrenching to me that no one claimed them in the first place, that they were returned to a kill-shelter by someone who didn’t understand the breed – -and that these two loving dogs were close to being euthanized!
Brian and I had no crates to transport them with , so I rode in the back of our truck with Penny and Perry…for an hour and 45 minutes, these dogs smothered me in love and puppy kisses. Here are some pictures from the ride home… and then when Perry got to our house.
We arrived back to our house with Penny and Perry, and walked them around the yard and provided plenty of water for them both. Penny’s foster family picked her up right away (I bawled my eyes out, as I had already became attached to these two wonderful dogs!!) Perry’s foster parents could not pick him up until Sunday, so Cello was going to have her first sleep-over!
We bathed Perry, gave him plenty of access to water, and fed him. Although extremely affectionate, Perry knew no basic commands, and did not have leash or house manners. Brian took Perry out on the street in front of our house, and I brought Cello out to meet Perry… both Cello and Perry were very happy to see each other! We walked them together down the street, and then back to our yard. When we were back inside our fenced-in yard, we let Cello off her leash…but Perry had already tried to leap our fence while on his leash, so we were unable to let him wander the yard off-lead. Luckily we had beautiful weather and were able to spend the day and most of the night outdoors. (Perry was not house trained, and had a bad case of diarrhea!) While outside, Perry saw other dogs, people, bikes, and cars go by our yard, and he did not once bark – he was such a good boy!! My aunt and uncle came to visit, and Perry greeted them gently, without jumping, barking, or being rough. Perry’s tail did not stop wagging from the time we picked him up from transport, until we saw him leave with his foster family!!
Perry
———————————————————————————–
Perry finally settled down and took a nap out by the lake!
When we came inside, Perry got a visit from my mom, who brought him over some nice treats to enjoy.
Perry immediately became attached to Brian – and became upset if Brian was out of his sight. …So Brain loaded up a crate with nice soft fluffy quilts and blankets, and put the crate right in front of our couch. Brian slept on the couch so that Perry would not be upset or alone. Perry did very well throughout the night. He was very content sleeping next to Brian, and whimpered each time he was about to have an accident (Brian ran him outside about 6 times that night due to his loose bowl movements). Overall, Perry did great!
In the above picture, check out the bottom quilt…my mom had given us some quilts and blankets she was going to get rid of so that we had some bedding for Perry. One of the quilts she gave us was mine as a kid (and has to be over 35 years old at this point!!) It’s a Life Savers candy quilt… but how cool/coincidental is that?!?!… LIFE SAVERS, and we are using it to help this GSP who would have lost his life if it wasn’t for the volunteers at several GSP rescues! I thought the Life Savers quilt was just too cool!
Cello was a polite hostess, and Perry was a great house guest. Perry’s foster family came to pick him up Sunday morning (more tears and sobbing on my part…!)
Both Penny and Perry need some basic training, but are two beautiful and affectionate German Shorthaired Pointers, and are now in their foster homes and up for adoption through the GSP Rescue of NJ. Penny has been renamed Casey by her foster family, and Perry is now referred to as Chester (short for Winchester) by his foster family. Pray that these wonderful dogs find their forever homes quickly!!
Thinking of a GSP? Think rescue! The National GSP Rescue lists regional GSP rescue groups across the United States and Canada. If you are interested in adoption, volunteering, or would like information on how to surrender your dog to rescue (Please do not surrender GSPs to a shelter or abandon them!!!!), please contact the group that covers your state or region. If there is no contact listed for your state, you can email the National GSP Rescue at rescue@gspca.org .
A GSP rescue will help match you up with the perfect GSP for your family!
UPDATE: BOTH PENNY AND PERRY HAVE BEEN ADOPTED!! YAY!
UPDATE ON “PERRY” (NOW CHESTER) on 02/20/2014: Here are some pictures of a very happy and healthy Chester at his forever home sent to me by his loving family!
JUST A DOG
From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.”
Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once feel slighted.
Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”
“Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure and unbridled joy.
“Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.
Because of “just a dog,” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.
I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog,” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a woman.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,” just smile–because they “just don’t understand.”

I have a Smart-Board in my classroom. The projected background photo is always the latest-and-greatest adventure of Cello. The students enjoy watching for the picture to change, and always ask about Cello and her great adventures. After one of Cello’s dock diving events, I had set a picture of her jumping off the dock as my background photo. The kids were so intrigued with the idea of Dock Diving, the topic became a part of our daily conversations before and after class…so when it came time to teach the skill of creating and interpreting a line graph, I thought, “Why not incorporate something they are really interested in into the lesson for Line Graphs?”
During the lessons of line graphs, we talked about Cello and her dock diving, and watched videos of her jumping. The kids could not get enough! We created a huge line graph on our bulletin board, and the students learned to graph points as they recorded Cello’s dock diving results from her past 3 events on our big bulletin board line graph. To show the students just how long she was jumping, we used a measuring tape, and measured from one end of the classroom to the length of her longest personal-best jump to date ( 22′ 7″ ). The students were shocked, and then became very curious how far they could jump…hmmm…good idea!
The students made predictions about their jumps, then we took a trip outside to the track next Math period. We measured 40 feet of running space (the same distance Cello has to gather up her speed on the dock) to the sand pit area of the long-jump. Our principal came outside with us to be the official judge of the students’ jumping distances. The students ran as fast as they could for 40 feet, then jumped with all their might into the sand pit. We had so much fun that day! I recorded all the jumps of the students, and took pictures of them jumping, as the principal called out their scores. The next day we took their jumping results and made computer-generated line graphs using Microsoft Excel, displaying the student’s jump distances. They students were able to personalize them with color and background pictures of themselves.
After the computerized line graphs were complete, I held an Awards Ceremony in class. The principal called the names of the students, and shook each student’s hand as he presented them with participation certificates, and pinned them with 1st, 2nd 3rd, and so-on ribbons as well. We had ceremonial music playing in the background, thanks to my friend and co-worker, Grace, who pulled up the Graduation Song on her iPad! The students were so excited about their awards, and were glowing with pride as everyone clapped for each student as they received their ribbon! We took lots of pictures of both the students jumping, as well as the ceremony, and added them to our Line Graph Bulletin Board.
After all was said and done, one of the classes asked if I could bring Cello in to school so they could meet her. I shrugged-off the idea, and told them it was not possible…but they weren’t convinced. They took it upon themselves to go to the principal during their lunch period, and asked for permission…and he was so impressed with the effort they had put into the lesson, that he granted it! They came to class after lunch that day screaming with excitement about the principal saying “YES!” I sent permission slips home to parents, and Cello’s first day at school was planned!
Today, Brian followed me to school with Cello in his car, and when the students arrived to school, they met me at my class to go as a group to to meet Cello! The students got to spend about 20 minutes getting to know Cello, and asking questions. They gave Cello treats, made her do her “tricks,” and gave her lots of hugs and pets. In return, the students got lots of puppy kisses and tail wagging from Cello!
The principal also made a “deal” with the students of my math class… if they meet their homework goal, Cello will be permitted to attend their math class for one period as a “guest-student” as they do their class-work!
Here is Cello this morning waiting by the door with her school bag, ready for her first day of school!
I have so many wonderful pictures of the students engaged in this lesson, the bulletin board, students jumping, student generated line graphs, and the meet-and-greet, but am unable to post them due to the students visibility in the photos. You’ll have to trust me on this one- – it was a fun lesson that students could not get enough of…and so cool to have Cello at school with me!
Just a few days ago, on Thanksgiving, I began a running challenge that I accepted from fellow WordPress blogger and Delmarva Dock Dogs dock diving friend, Annie. This challenge is Holiday Streak! I really needed something like this to get myself up and moving again!
Around the same time I accepted this challenge, I came across a really cool pin on Pinterest… It was about a site called PetsMove.org. This site encourages people and their dogs – of all ages and fitness levels – to get out and get moving. Their motto is “Get off your butt, workout with your mutt!” (Love it!) The site offers goals, prizes and and a supporting member community. The site is free, has no intense or intimidating guidelines, and is really neat! I decided I would register myself and Cello to help record our Holiday Streak efforts. I also submitted Cello’s picture and bio to be considered for a spot in their Featured Dogs slide show. I just found out Cello made the slide show!
Check Cello’s full bio out at http://petsmove.org/slide/cello/ …then register yourself and your dog, and “Get off your butt, workout with your mutt!”

We camped in Elk Neck State Park in North East, MD for Thanksgiving with our friends, Brandi and Stan. Cello and I kicked off the day with our first mile of the Holiday Streak Challenge! (Thanks Annie for getting us motivated and moving!) …then Brian deep-fried the turkey….YUM! We had a great trip – lots of fun, and lots to be thankful for!
